Allentown School District Approves Flying Classroom Curriculum for STEM Enrichment
ALLENTOWN, PA — During its regular meeting on Thursday, October 24, 2024, the Allentown School District School Board of Directors approved the implementation of Flying Classroom curriculum for academic enrichment initiatives.
The curriculum, which will be integrated into the district’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC), provides a digital, supplemental STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program aligned with state and national standards. This hands-on learning is inspired by the travels and adventures of Captain Barrington Irving. Irving is a Jamaican-born American pilot who, in 2007, became the youngest and first Black person to fly solo around the world.
The 21st CCLC program, funded by federal grants, establishes centers offering academic instruction and enrichment outside of regular school hours. Students participating in the 21st CCLC will receive 432 hours of instruction during the school year, with an additional 64 hours provided over the summer.
While enrolled, students will benefit from targeted enrichment in reading, science, math, technology, and literacy. The Flying Classroom curriculum will enhance their experience by offering hands-on STEM learning opportunities.
“The Flying Classroom curriculum is an outstanding addition to our 21st Century Community Learning Centers,” said Dr. Carol D. Birks, Superintendent and Chief Executive Officer of the Allentown School District. “This innovative program will allow our students to explore the world virtually, connecting their learning to real-world experiences through exciting STEM expeditions. In alignment with our Strategic Plan, the Allentown School District is committed to creating pathways for tomorrow by creating cutting-edge experiences and opportunities for students.”
Each student in the program will receive grade-level appropriate STEM expedition kits, including materials for completing content-specific activities and engineering design challenges. These activities are designed to inspire students and provide them with workforce development opportunities.
The Flying Classroom curriculum will be rolled out across the district’s seven CCLC cohorts beginning Monday, November 11, 2024. Families interested in enrolling their child in the 21st Century can contact their teacher or principal.
The cost for the program is $48,885 per cohort per year, funded through the 21st CCLC grant.
